Approaching Medieval Sources

About the Series

Approaching Medieval Sources provides in-depth companions to the rich array of sources available for those researching the medieval period. The books in the series are dedicated to specific sources and records from across Europe, spanning the full range of the medieval period, c. 500-c. 1500. Each volume introduces readers to the record itself, its historical and historiographical context, and includes case studies illustrating how the source can be analysed and interpreted.

Each volume in the series is designed to provide an accessible research-led companion for both experienced researchers and students alike. The books offer a practical guide for those visiting the archives and working with (often difficult) source-material for the first time. They also offer theoretical approaches to the material by demonstrating how the author has worked with the sources, thus encouraging the reader to approach the records in new and novel ways. In each case, the material is situated at the core of the volume to enable a combination of informative and innovative analysis in a concurrent published format. To address the evolution of record format and function across the medieval period, this series endeavours to produce, when necessary, more than one companion to a single record series.
